Early life
Oprah was born into a poor African American family and experienced poverty, domestic violence, and sexual assault during her childhood. She ran away from home at the age of 14 and became pregnant at one point (the child died prematurely).
Despite this, she excelled in school and won a scholarship from Tennessee State University, majoring in communication studies.

Career
At the age of 19, she became a news anchor for a local radio station and was one of the youngest and first African American female anchors at the time.
